Edwin Kim is Associate Professor and Chief of the Division of Pediatric Allergy and Immunology at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in Chapel Hill, NC. In addition to providing clinical care in pediatric allergy and immunology, as Director of the UNC Food Allergy Initiative (UNC FAI), Dr. Kim is involved in clinical and translational research in food allergy with a focus on the development of novel therapeutics for the treatment of IgE-mediated food allergy.
Since 2015, Dr. Kim and the UNC FAI have been involved in over 30 clinical trials including NIH-funded, industry-sponsored, and PI-initiated studies. The UNC FAI has been a clinical site within the NIH-NIAID sponsored Consortium for Food Allergy Research (CoFAR) since its inception in 2005, was the lead site for the Immune Tolerance Network-sponsored IMPACT trial, and is also a Discovery Center of Distinction within the FARE Clinical Network.
Dr. Kim has significant experience in food immunotherapy participating and leading numerous clinical trials of oral immunotherapy (OIT), sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT), and epicutaneous immunotherapy (EPIT). Dr. Kim has particular expertise in the use of SLIT for the treatment of peanut allergy with multiple publications on its use in peanut-allergic children. In addition to immunotherapy, Dr. Kim has experience in the use of biologics for the treatment of food allergy including dupilumab for the treatment of peanut allergy sponsored by Regeneron and most recently omalizumab for the treatment of multiple food allergies as part of the CoFAR11 OUTMATCH clinical trial.
He is a fellow of both the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI) and American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI), and also a member of the Society for Pediatric Research (SPR).
